Preston Mill Turns Once More

Nestled within an idyllic location in the beautiful East Lothian region of Scotland, Preston Mill is an iconic and memorable sight. Made famous by its use as Lallybroch in Outlander, when you first see Preston Mill you might think you’ve taken a step back in time. With its curious Dutch-style conical roof, the mill is an architectural oddity that enchants visitors as much as it delights painters and photographers.

However, in winter 2018, the Mill’s water wheel fused and would no longer turn. NTS USA partnered with NTS on what turned out to be a wildly successful social media crowdfunder to fund the repairs needed to fix the wheel. With the help of Outlander fans around the globe, and Outlander star Sam Heughan who has been vocal in his support of the campaign, the necessary funds were raised in just a couple short weeks!

We’re very thankful to everyone who has supported this project by raising awareness of the work we needed to do to protect this important place. Whether it was spreading the work on social media, or by donating to our crowdfund appeal, it’s been fantastic to see. Thanks for helping us to get the wheel turning once again.

Stuart Maxwell, General Manager Edinburgh & East

After a summer of repair work by our team of preservation engineers, the water wheel is turning once more! Together we have restored and saved a key piece of Scotland’s industrial heritage which will continue to delight and inspire everyone who visits – both today and in years to come.
