Film Program: Scotland’s Great Gardens

The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA is delighted to offer a one-hour film, Great Gardens of Perthshire, Kinross, and the Kingdom of Fife, designed to bring magnificent gardens of east and central Scotland to your members from the comfort of their own homes.

Balcarres Gardens

The gardens of Perthshire, Kinross, and Fife represent centuries of Scottish history and culture. Perthshire marks the start of the Highlands, while the Kingdom of Fife is home to the ancient town of St Andrews, a site of pilgrimage since 345ad and well-known today as the location of Scotland’s first University and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.

Great Gardens of Perthshire, Kinross, and the Kingdom of Fife features an exploration of private gardens held in the same families for more than 300 years; significant designed landscapes cared for by the National Trust for Scotland (the largest garden owner in Scotland) on behalf of future generations; and a more recently created garden of extraordinary beauty.

Caring for a garden with a long history presents professional and home gardeners with similar maintenance and design challenges: what do you retain and what can you change? Do you research and restore lost or damaged features and, if so, to what period? How do you document the changes, if at all? And how do you manage an historic garden in the face of environmental factors that are out of your immediate control, including invasive species, catastrophic storms, or the broader impact of climate change?

Garden owners including Sir Peter and Lady Erskine (Cambo), The Lord and Lady Balniel (Balcarres), and Tobias Anstruther of that Ilk (Balcaskie), as well as Scottish garden expert Paddy Scott and the National Trust for Scotland’s heritage gardening experts, will address these questions and provide you with a brief tour of this extraordinary region of Great Britain.

Interested in visiting these gardens in person? The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA is organizing a five-night tour of the magnificent gardens of Perthshire, Kinross, and the Kingdom of Fife September 5 to 10, 2022. Learn more and reserve your place today.
