Abertarff House

The oldest house in Inverness has a rich history. Dating all the way back to 1593, it has survived against the odds, and today remains a unique and fascinating example of Highland city life.

Abertarff House has had many owners over the years. In the early 1800s, Archibald Fraser of Lovat (son of the 11th Lord Lovat, who was beheaded for treason after the Battle of Culloden), bought the property to use as a townhouse in addition to his castle near Beauly. In 1963 Abertarff came into the Trust’s care, and served as its regional headquarters for several decades, until it was opened to the public for the first time in 2018.
